3g 16gb dock doesn't work with 8gb iphone?

So I tried fixing my home button not working by changing up the dock in my 8gb iphone 3g with the one in my 16gb 3g however after I was done installing the iphone lcd did not power on?

Can someone explain to why?

everything returned to normal when I put back the original dock
