3G 2.2 fw upgrade to 3.1.2

I have a friend who has an iPhone 3G with 2.2 firmware on it. This iphone is all messed up. Somebody did the jailbreak for him and he doesn't have access to this person now. He doesn't have a backup of the phone either to do a restore, and nobody pressed the make my life easier in Cydia and Cydia is not working. How can I upgrade this phone to 3.1.2 using Windows. I've been reading a lot, but the more I read, the more confused I get.

"Make my life easier" is only available with the 3GS. SHSH blobs and all that crap doesn't pertain to the 3G.

Redsn0w should work just fine for you

So I just download 3.1.2 fw for 3g and redsnow and Upgrade with that. This will erase everything from the phone and do a clean isntall of cydia right?
