I currently use Verizon and my friend offered me his 3G iPhone for $50 as he's getting a 3G S. I would like to dump Verizon and buy his 3G, but Verizon has a $200 cancellation fee so I'm stuck with them for six more months. Could I use the iPhone for data (via wifi) and music/videos (basically like an iPod Touch) without setting up a plan until my contract with Verizon runs out?

You should sell the iPhone 3G you get from your friend now. Then when you switch to AT&T you can get an iPhone 3G for $99. You will be able to sell the one you have now for around $300. Now you will make a $150 profit instead of a $50 loss and you will have a brand new iPhone 3G instead of a used one.

I'd rather go with my original plan and use it as an iPod Touch for the time being. I don't have that phone yet though. That's why I'm asking if I can still use the data/iPod features of the 3G without it being on a wireless plan.

Yes you can. However, it was my understanding you can pro-rate you $200. With only 6 months to go it should be less then $200.

Yes

I used my Original iPhone as an iPod Touch for awhile when I bought my 3G. Worked great with wifi.

get the icall voip call app. free phone calls over ip. it works good. the voice is a bit rough, but its free voip, so its awesome!

you can use all the features that don't require cell service. you asked about "data"-if you mean cell phone data then no, not without a plan. if you mean data over wifi then yes.
