3g Bar fix when it came out

Didn't Apple do a software patch back when the 3g came that made the bars larger? As I recall people bitched about the bars when the 3g came out and Apple released a fix.
So what it sounds like to me is they are now undoing their db/bar interpretation for the Iphone 4.
