Hey guys :D I appreciate any possible help/insight you can give me...

I have an iPhone 3G, and with a dock connector that has corroded and is now malfunctioning...one day I tried to update the software on the phone, and afterwards, it was acting really funky--the home button wasn't working, and I was stuck in the "phone" mode.

Then after restarting it, it went into recovery mode, so I tried to connecting it to my computer and resetting it--to no avail. I got "unknown error, code 2001," or something to that effect. I tried to do it a couple more times, each time getting the same error, and eventually the computer stopped even recognizing a USB device had been plugged in whenever I plugged the iphone in. I tried using different cables on both my macbook pro and a windows laptop, but nothing worked.

I tried to put my iPhone in "DFU" mode to recover it but couldn't. So I called up the local apple store, explained my problem, and they told me that the manager of the store would personally take a look at my phone.

He blew canned air on the connector, put it in DFU mode and tried connecting it, using different cables, but nothing worked. Then he looked at it with a light and told me the bad news: the connector had corroded, and there wasn't really anything we could do. He said since the iPhone was out of warranty, it wasn't worth sending to apple to fix, so he said in his opinion my best options were to replace it with another 3G for $200, a 3GS starting at $500, or an iPhone 4 starting at $600. D'OH!

Now, I also have a broken iPhone 3GS (pretty much smashed to bits, don't ask me about it, heh), and I was wondering...could I possibly use the dock connector from the iphone 3GS to replace the broken dock connector on my iPhone 3G? I know parts stores sell the 3g/3gs dock connectors separately, but I'm wondering if Apple's "universal dock connector" design will allow me to hack it together.

Barring that, could anybody recommend an online vendor for the parts, and/or repairs?

One other thing--before any of this happened, the silencer switch wasn't really working, it seemed to be stuck in "vibrate" mode. Is this phone even worth fixing, or does it look like more problems down the road? Or should I fix it up, sell it for $100 or so and be done with it?! lol

Thanks for any help!
