Im new here, but I have been browsing for quite awhile. From what I gather, a 3G iphone is on a short horizon. Now, I just bought an iphone at the beginning of the year and my question is the new applications being introduced such as IM, video, etc can those be downloaded to my phone or are they 3G exclusive?

We don't even know if those things will be coming from Apple for sure, so we certainly don't know what features will or won't be available on the existing iPhone. 3rd party applications will definitely be available on your phone, though, and may include many or all of the software features you want.

Yeah, the App Store where you can download third-party apps will be a part of iPhone OS 2.0, which will be available to all current iPhone and iPod Touches. Any special software for the 3G iPhone will be specifically related to any special hardware on the device, such as GPS or a front-facing camera.
