3G iPhone and iPod on same Mac question

I have a Macbook and a iPod classic. Now, I have over 30GB of stuff on there, but I know you sync the iPhone using iTunes. How does this work, obviously the stuff isn't going to fit, does it make a new profile? Or do I have to uncheck everything so it doesn't try to put it all over?

How does this co-exist? Sorry for the newb question.
