3G (not LTE) default coming off Wifi?

Sometimes when I move out of range of my wifi connection, my phone will jump onto 3G instead of LTE. If I toggle airplane mode, it will jump onto LTE with full bars-- so it's not that LTE is not available.

Anyone else have this problem?

I'm using a 5s (but it seems like an iOS issue more than a hardware issue).
