3g on but Won't Connect

I have an original iPad running 5.1. I just turned on and signed up for a month of 3g after not using 3g for about six months. AT&T sent me an email saying I was signed up for 30 and the iPad says I have 3g, but nothing connects. For instance Safari says " Cannot Open Page because you are not connected to the internet and Could not activate cellular dat network.

I searched, but search hates me and all I could find was answers to every 3g question under the sun except this one.
