My 3g is stuck on the iTunes restore screen. Unplugged it will power down after 30 seconds, almost exactly, every time. The battery seems okay at holding a charge as I can turn it on over and over again after it powers down but it still turns off after 30 seconds.
If it's plugged in it will always stay on the iTunes restore screen.
When plugged in I get the "iPhone in recovery mode" message. When I try to do a factory restore it goes through most of the process and then at some point it turns off.
I've also tried different jailbreaking methods and same thing. It will go through the restoring of the custom firmware and then power down at some point before finishing and failing.
I recently read a post that said that the iPhone drops the USB power during restore at some point and goes to battery. This would explain losing connection during the restore as it would shut down after 30 seconds of battery power.
Is it possible that the battery can hold a charge but it just won't stay powered on for more than 30 seconds? Or should I be looking at something else? I've tried everything that I can think of (hard reset, entering DFU mode, factory restore) except opening it up and replacing hardware.
