Hi guys.

I'm trying to unlock an iphone 3G. This is a second-hand phone that has never been jailbroken or unlocked.
The current firmware is 4.02

I've been following instructions from a number of sites, with attention to the guides on iclarified.com.
I have jailbroken and unlocked a number of iphones before.

When using redsnow, I get to the point where redsnow should be uploading to the iphone. Redsnow tells me that the rest of the process will happen on my phone, and that it is waiting for my phone to reboot.

However, my phone stays in DFU mode, with the screen remaining blank. Nothing happens.

Looking at other forum posts, it seems that this problem can be overcome by plugging and unplugging the phone.
This doesn't seem to work for me.

What can I do?

Further thoughts:
If I continue to have trouble with 4.02, could I downgrade to 4.0, and then use jailbreakme.com?
Will this work if the phone has been previously updated?
