3G symbol became circle?

I was on Safari today on the iPhone and noticed when I went to a website the 3G symbol turned into a small circle...as soon as I went back away from the website I was viewing the 3G symbol popped back up...what does that circle mean?

It means the iPhone is on a GPRS network or on Verizon's 3G voice network. Both get you very slow near dialup speeds.

That means that your network signal dropped and data connection became GPRS/EDGE instead of 3G/H speed. Once it reinstates the network strength, the 3G signal comes back

On Verizon, "o" is 1xRTT (comparable to EDGE). "3G" is EVDO.
