I haven't seen this one in the threads 
I have about 2000 songs on my 16Gb iPhone. When I sync it to my iMac it goes through a process of "Updating Files" and proceeds to reload about 500 songs each time.
Any ideas what would cause songs to need to be updated? I'm not playing them in iTunes, and haven't edited the tag info - so can't figure out why files would be re-written to the iPhone again.
I'm only syncing a single playlist (which is not a smartlist). I tried unloading the music and syncing it from scratch, didn't fix the problem.
