One of the biggest gripes about the iPhone 3G seems to be its battery life for 3G talk time. Apple claims that you can now get more talk time out of the battery if you're on a 2G network.

Here's my question: Will it be possible to configure the iPhone 3G so that you can use 3G for data, but 2G when you start a voice call? I'm sure the jailbreaking/modding community can find a solution to this. I would be willing to give up the extra "clarity" of 3G talk in exchange for more battery life.

There should be a fully automated solution though.

Seems like an interesting idea at first, but the best part of using 3G for voice is that you'll be able to use data at the same time. If Apple wanted to implement your idea, they probably would have already.
