This is the failure I get when I connect my iPhone to my computer to tether...

I have a netbook with XP and got the same thing all time...nothing worked....upgraded it to Windows 7 Ultimate last week, tethering works great now

Interesting, but that's not an option on this computer. I have another one that it works fine on with XP.
