Does anyone know how this works technically. I'm in Boston and work on the top floor of a pretty big building. At this height I only get edge, if I go near a window I get a very weak 3 g signal. When I go down to street level the phone does not switch back to 3g where a 5 bar 3g signal exists. Very often I may have to reboot the phone to get the 3g signal back. Sometimes it will revert back over a long period of time.

try going to settings->general->network and toggle the "enable 3g" off then on and see if that helps, this might make the phone find 3g without you having to reset the whole thing.
Generally I leave my iphone on edge and switch to 3g when I surf or need the speed specifically for an app. If you leave it on 3g it will drain your battery way faster.
