3G Upgrade Question

Alright, I had an original iphone but it was stolen about a month ago. I decided to wait till the 3G model was released to get a new one. My question is that since i don't have a sim card, how will this be addressed?

i dont really know...

in fact, i got mine stollen 3 weeks ago and waited for the new iphone to buy a new one.
meanwhile, i got a new sim card to make it work with another phone.

RESULT: im not elligible for upgrade even though i had the iphone 1 since the first day and been an att customer since that day as well...
seems the thief stole me another 200$......
