3G USB Modem Driver Software Advice

Hi

I have just bought a used and unlocked generic 3G USB modem. Can anyone recommend some good software to drive/manage this with my macbook?

I am planning on travelling and my only experience so far with USB modems is using software from telcos - but perhaps there is something available that is generic and will work across countries and 3G providers. I plan on swapping SIMs at the borders.

Functionality-wise, as well as using the internet, it would be great to at least be able to send and receive SMS from the SIM.
