Is there a way to convert a brand new 3Gs to use 2.2.1?

I love to be able to use 2.2.1 on a faster phone.
 
I dont think so. 3.0 has the "drivers" and "hardware support" of the 3gs in which previous firmwares didnt have. I dont think that it would work downgrading. I could be wrong however.
