The description is bad: Iphone 3gs with 4.2.1 broadband 6.15.00 unlocked and jailbroken. I am not sure which software was used because I bought the phone off e-bay. I started Cydia and the phone goes black as in DFU mode. I plug it into my Mac and allow a restore. Apple will not "recognize the restore" and I tunes wants to upgrade. I stop at this point. Is there anyway I can get my Iphone unlocked and working again?

Thanks

You can only restore it to custom ipsw's since it has the ipad baseband.
An official restore with itunes will always error out.
Create a custom 4.1 ipsw with pwnage or snowbreeze and restore using that.

He could make a 4.3.3 IPSW with PwnageTool or Sn0wbreeze if he has the SHSH blobs for that firmware.

True, not sure if he does though.
And since Apple is still releasing 4.1 blobs for the 3GS it would be a sure deal that it would work.
But I agree that 4.3.3 would be a better option if he can go with that.

How do you create custom IPSW? Software for Mac recommendations.

Thanks

Spent days several times using PawnageTool 4.2 - following the instructions on iClarified http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=4254 mod hosts file, pawnagetool, itunes. Get all the way to restoring with iTunes. I now have the error "The iPhone could not be restored because the firmware file is not compatible." Where I am going wrong?

"The iPhone could not be restored because the firmware file is not compatible."

Could the error message be anymore obvious?

You're trying to restore non-3Gs firmware onto an iPhone 3Gs. Use the iPhone2,1 firmware.

Not intuitively obvious to a newbie

Since I have the SHSH for 4.2.1 can I restore to that software? Or just go to 4.1? I do not know the advantages of either version of software. Would restoring to an apple version of 4.1 or 4.2.1 require rejailbreaking and unlocking? Do I use the edited host file or the orignal? Since I also have 6.15.0 would that also change with the above restore?

Since you have the iPad baseband, you must jailbreak you iPhone to use it. You can use either 4.2.1 or 4.1, but you must first make a IPSW in PwnageTool.

Unfortunately that is what I did. I used PawnageTool 4.2 to create a custom ISPW. Entered DFU - got to the point where PawnageTool instructed to restore using the created ISPW with iTunes. I get the could not be restored ...... error. So at this point do I allow iTunes to take the phone the 4.3.5 and then downgrade to 4.1 -jailbreak - unlock - possibly restore the iPad baseband?
