I got my Apple iPhone 3GS on 3.1 right now.

I used Mac and pwnage tools to create custom firmware of both 3.1 and the new 3.1.2 for the purpose of jailbreaking and maybe even unlocking.

After the custom firmware created, entered dfu recovery mode, itunes can't restore the custom files. Itunes can only restore the original file.

Advice please...

Maybe try reading? That's some good advice.

You cannot Jailbreak a 3GS on 3.1 out of the box by simply restoring to a custom IPSW. Use something like Blackra1n for an OTB JB.

I think the latest version of PwnageTool may have something for this, but only for the 3GS, not iPod Touch 2G.

Edit: Yep, you need PwnageTool 3.1.4 or Blackra1n.

I had an identical problem when jailbreaking mine for the first time last week. Install of the custom firmware would time out and iTunes would give me an error message, even though I was using pwnage 3.1.4.

I gave blackra1n a try and it worked fine. It jailbroke the phone, then I installed the custom firmware with no problems.

Hope it works for you too.

Most of those issue are when you create the wrong IPSW. make sure to choose never pwnd before. That was the issue for me.

Using blackra1n then install custom firmware worked, however only to 3.1, not the 3.1.2. But still good enough. Thanks.

Any reason why it won't work to 3.1.2? Must I be updated to 3.1.2 first then install the 3.1.2 custom firmware?

3.1.2 will work if you create a custom ispw with pwnage 3.1.4

Please, read this and this...

If you update to official 3.1.2 then it is out of the box, you cannot normally restore to a custom IPSW.

On the dev team's blog they say that a custom ispw can be used with a 3gs on 3.1 or 3.1.2 out of the box.

SUMMARY:

* The iPhone 3GS is now supported out of the box in PwnageTool 3.1.4 (or if you have upgraded to 3.1.x in iTunes)
* The iPod 2G is still supported in PwnageTool 3.1.4 but you must already be jailbroken (we’ll update this if there’s a big demand from non-jailbroken ipt2G owners)
* The iPod touch 3G is NOT supported

Note for 3GS users not already jailbroken and stuck at 3.1.x: this version of PwnageTool has a side feature to jailbreak your 3GS. It uses a simple implementation of the usb control msg hole found by chronicdev, geohot, and our very own gray. (Update: please make sure iTunes and iTunesHelper are not running when PwnageTool asks you if your 3GS is already jailbroken/pwned). Now that the hole is public and in use, we expect Apple to close it by the next major firmware update. That’s why 3GS users need to get their ECID hashes for 3.1.x now, and need to stay onboard the “jailbreak train” in all future updates. For more details on what this means, please see our earlier posts or ask in our comments section (moderated by the always helpful @angie and @confucious!).

I had the exact problem. Used Pwnage 3.1.4 on my 3GS with 3.1.2 and iTunes came up will all sorts of errors.

I could only restore to the proper ispw.

I used Blackra1n instead and it took about 4 seconds for it to JB and it never lost my apps. There was no need to restore.

It was TOO easy. there must be a catch :)

But I thought Blackra1n only offered a tethered JB/ Unlock for 3G S on 3.1.2 with baseband 5.11: you cannot let your battery die.

Is this correct?
