3Gs Died - Can one Restore 3Gs backup to original 2G iphone

Hi... My sons 3Gs dies yesterday and We are waiting for the new one to come out in October to upgrade. i was wondering since we have a backup of his 3GS on iTunes with all his contacts etc can we restore that to his 2G or does it try to bring over version and all the other data.
