i was just thinking about what would happen if i need to do a factory restore on my 3GS with 3.0.1. Unless i'm wrong, because of the new signing, i'm going to have to either upgrade to 3.1, or....nothing??

how would i get a clean 3.0.1 on my phone again?

I suppose i could make a backup right?

AFAIK, you can't restore a 3.1 backup to an earlier firmware.

I tried to downgrade to 3.0, which was successful, and restore from a 3.1.1 backup, and iTunes said it couldn't restore from it because the software was too old (WTF?).

I dont have 3.1, i have 3.0.1. I never upgraded and i dont want to. I want to know what i could do in case of an iphone emergency

"Erase all settings and content" will be the closest you will get.

I just restored a 3g I sold to 3.0 without issue so I don't see why you couldn't do 3.0.1 without issue. Also updated a 2g from 2.2.1 to 3.0.... same non issue.

How did you restore from 2.2.1 to 3.0? You really should post a guide for us. You must be the guru we've been looking for. And on a 3G. Amazing.

OG and 3G iPhones are not affected by this firmware signing nonsense, as far as I know.
