3gs losing free space on /var mysteriously?

When I woke up this morning I had a message on my 3gs screen saying. Running out of space, please Free some space.

I only have a few songs and tons of space free but in General>about is said 0gb free!

I turned off, it took AGES! Then turn back on, also took longer than usual but free space is back.

However, within 2 minutes I'd lost 2gb of free space. And now, 2 hours later Ive lost 3 gb and counting.

Any ideas why?
