I changed everything. New display assembly. New back assembly. Only thing i kept was the motherboard and camera. Now everything works except the sim card. 
Sim works on other phones (android, shrugs), so thats not the problem. I even installed a motherboard from another 3gs with the exact same outcome.
on another note i experienced a 2001 error in itunes and fixed it by putting in the screws into the display assembly. noob error.
so, anyone know how i can get my sim to work again. could i have done something wrong when assembling the phone? all buttons, screen, speakers, microphone, battery, dock connector, sensors work as they should.
appreciate all help.
