I called local Apple store and was given an appointment at the genius bar.
The guy plugged my phone into their laptop and could see that i had updated software, re-installed it and rebooted recently.
He says 'I can see you've done reboots and re-install. The phone is out of warranty, but i'll replace it right now at no cost'.
Although the problem shouldn't have existed, the customer service couldn't have been better - THANK YOU to Apple Store, Union Square, Aberdeen, Scotland.
Faith in customer service restored, even if faith in products not what it was before IPhone4 and this problem.
