3GS spirit jailbroken 3.1.3. How to get 4.0 w/ jailbreak?

Hi I have a spirit jailbroken iPhone 3GS running 3.1.3, but I believe that I have the old bootrom. my serial number says my iPhone was made in week 25. I've seen the instructions for the 3Gs with the old bootrom:

3GS ("old" 359.3 bootrom) - PwnageTool 4.0 has now been released. It allows owners of old-bootrom 3GS phones to do a "jailbreak train" upgrade to 4.0 by creating a custom pre-jailbroken firmware. To use this tool, you must be already have an untethered jailbreak by a method other than Spirit. Do not upgrade directly to 4.0 official; restore only to a custom firmware..

However, since I have the Spirit jailbreak, i'm not sure what to do. Shoudl I restore to the standard 3.1.3 firmward to lose the Spirit Jailbreak? And then use pwnage to jailbreak 3.1.3? Can I do this with PwnageTool 4.0 or do I need a different versions? Then can I use PwnageTool 4.0 to make the IPSW file for firmware 4.0?

I'm not entirely sure if I'm thinking about this properly or if I can even do it since I've used Spirit. Anyone have any tips or help for me. Any info or help would be greatly appreciated.

If you have the SHSH saved, you can downgrade to 3.1.2, jailbreak it with something other than Spirit and then load a custom iOS4 IPSW; if you don't, then you won't be able to get iOS4 jailbroken until a new one is released.

I'm in a similar situation. I have a 3GS with 3.1.3 and the old bootrom. I don't have my 3.1.2 SHSH saved, but I do have 3.1.3 SHSH saved. I don't want to JB with Spirit so I can go to 4.0 JB, but even on my Mac I followed the PwnageTool method to make the custom ipsw file and every time I try to restore it, I get a 1600 or 1604 error. Isn't PwnageTool supposed to work for the JB on my phone/FW combo?

You're trying to restore a custom 3.1.3 IPSW?
 
I'm on 3.1.3 and tried to jailbreak via Redsn0w so I could then jailbreak 4.0 via pwnage route but Redsn0w isn't recognizing my phone when it's in Recovery Mode.

I did on my PC, but not my Mac. I tried to restore it on both. Even tried Recovery and DFU mode prior to restoring on both too.

For my other 3GS (which was on 3.1.2) I had no problem JB and unlocking to 4.0. But then again, for that one, I was able to use Blackra1n instead for the initial JB of 3.1.2.

Spirit is your only choice for the same reason that you can't use PwnageTool. Spirit doesn't prevent PwnageTool from working, it just doesn't have the ability to enable a PwnageTool upgrade by patching the bootloader to accept custom firmwares.
 
To echo the above statements, you downgrade to 3.1.2, Pwn it using pwnagetool, then build a custom 4.0 with pwnagetool and restore the phone using that. I did it today and it works fine. Just make sure your SHSH file is saved.

I bought this iPhone on eBay 2 weeks ago, but I just checked cydia and it says "This device has SHSHs on file for iPHone OS: 3.1, 3.1.2, 3.1.3

I guess that means I can downgrade to 3.1.2. Then I should jailbreak using Pwnage on 3.1.2. Can I use Pwnage 4.0? to do this.

Nope, pwnage 4 will only recognize iOS4's official IPSW. The best thing to do is downgrade to 3.1.2, and jailbreak with something like blackra1n, create your custom IPSW with pwnage and the official apple IPSW then restore to the custom (Not official)
 
I have the 3GS running 3.1.3 using SPirit, sorry but i am confused as to whether I can upgrade to iOS4.
It is an old 3GS bought at release.
Modem Firmware 05.12.01
Cydia has SHSH on file for 3.0 , 3.1 , 3.1.2 and 3.1.3

I have access to a Mac
