3GS To 4S Via iTunes/iCloud Restore, Best Method?

Update 3GS to iOS 5
Backup 3GS to iTunes/iCloud
Restore to new 4S

Or

Skip upgrading 3GS to iOS 5
Backup 3GS to iTunes
Restore to new 4S

Which method? I'm leaning towards the first but wanted thoughts from others. I do want to do restore either way as I don't want to risk losing data or having to re-enter things (contacts, etc.).
