If you have a friend with AT&T you can pop his/her SIM in to "unbrick" the phone VIA iTunes then proceed with the Jailbreak and unlock...

Not sure if theres a hacktivation for 4.2.1 out yet...

The new Pwnagetool should be able to do it, but that's only any good if you're a Mac user...

Sn0wbreeze only works up to 4.1, cry.

GreenPois0n will activate and jailbreak it, giving the iPhone an untethered jailbreak. Then you need to use Redns0w to install the iPad baseband in order to unlock.

I ran the new GP RC 6 (the newest one) on a non-activated iPhone 3GS running 4.2.1 and when it was done jailbreaking it was still non-activated.

telling me the firmware file is not compatible after creating it with pwnage tool..
