Apps 3rd party activity apps

Do any of the 3rd party activity apps use the accelerometer on the Watch itself? Or are they all GUIs for their iPhone app?

If so, can they run in the background on the Watch and track steps all day?

3ed party apps don't have Watch sensor access or are native. They are just extensions of their iPhone app.
