I have a couple of professional apps that in the past few months have started glitching out like crazy and I'm wondering if it's a sign that something in my iPad's physical hardware (memory or SSD particularly) is starting to die.

These two apps are made by different companies. Very often now, one of the apps (Box) will just freeze in the middle of doing stuff, or (even more commonly) if I need to switch to another app and come back to it, it will be frozen when I return. I have a 3rd gen iPad Air with 3GB of RAM so having an app unload from memory in these cases has never been unusual for me, but what's happening now is that the app won't just freeze; it will crash and then every attempt to restart it will fail after about 20 seconds. It continues doing this for several minutes / attempts (I'm gonna say around a dozen times) before finally it manages to start up successfully.

It just started doing this randomly in the middle of the summer; I hadn't updated it or my OS in a long time so it wasn't a buggy software issue. I did try uninstalling and reinstalling it a few times and eventually updated from iPadOS 17 to 18, but no change in the situation.

What's weird is the other pro app I'm using (Photoshop), often hangs and crashes, or has a black loading screen for several minutes if I return to it at the same time the first app is going through its reboot loop. And then the condition will resolve itself at the same time as it does in Box. It's as though there's something happening at an OS or hardware level, not just an issue with the apps themselves.

Both these apps use a ton of storage on my iPad, FWIW. I've had to delete and reinstall Photoshop several times to clear up its storage, since they don't give you any way to clear out its cache. Weirdly, the iPad itself usually reports a decent amount left (like 80GB remaining out of 256GB), but even with that much Photoshop will start throwing up errors about not having enough storage left on the device. Hard to tell if the OS or PS is right about that.

It's incredibly difficult to get help from the companies on these obscure issues, whether Apple, Adobe or Box. Just wondering whether any iPad users out there have experienced these kinds of things in general (not just with these apps in particular).

The crash loop is usually a sign of insufficient RAM.
I've suspected RAM as a culprit but like, why now all of a sudden, and just that app? My device has always had the same limitations and my usage hasn't changed in years...

Apps get updated, too. Maybe the newer versions have heavier memory footprint. Also, iPadOS 18 uses more memory than 17.

I've had Facebook Messenger crash just opening an Amazon link as it tries to open a browser instance in-app. This was on an iPad 7th gen (A10 3GB iOS 18). No such issues on a 2017 iPad Pro 12.8 (A10X 4GB iOS 17).

Try closing all apps and hard reset your iPad. 3GB just isn't suitable for multitasking nowadays.
