Apps 3rd Party App Updates

I noticed this evening that the CNN and Applesider Apple Watch apps were not updating on the watch. I went in and enabled background update on the CNN phone app and it did not update. Once I activated the app on the phone, it updated and then the watch app updated. Am I doing something wrong or will these apps not update until the phone app is open?

I also wonder how do you know when the Apple watch apps are updated? Is it automatic when you update the iPhone app?

In that update did they mention anything related to the Apple watch?

No, just the background refresh option for CNN. After uninstalling Appleinsider twice on the watch it updated again. Curious if that continues.
