3rd party apps behavior

I have AW 5 with always on set. Anyone know why some 3rd party apps complication icons don't display while watch face is active? Happens after I turn watch off then back on (when I change out bands so I don't keep activating complications with my bumble fingers). Pictures below.

This has happened since day one. Nothing new. Just tap the icon and it should populate the data.
