I got a 3rd party Thunderbold to HDMI adapter off Amazon, however, audio comes out of the Macbook Air mid-2011 and video comes on the TV.

I thought this was normal, since my 2009 Core 2 Duo Windows 7 machine also has the same issue.

Up until recently, I found out it's not normal and my Kindle HD and new Windows 8 Asus machine can transfer both Video & Audio through the HDMI cable.

So, is it a limitation of my Macbook Air mid-2011 or the non-Apple Thunderbolt to HDMI cable?

Check System Preferences > Sound > Output or OPTION/Alt click the sound/volume icon in the Menu Bar and tell us, what is listed and checked as Output Device.
