I got my new mbp about 3 wks ago, perfect no problems. First Week I was averaging 50-55 degrees websurfing, downloading, movies. Just last night I noticed I'm getting 65-75 (at one point 80) degrees doing the same thing.

Since the first week, I've added a bunch of utility apps:
1. Quicksilver
2. Default Folder X
3. Smart Scroll
4. Lazy Mouse
5. MultiClutch
6. Growl
7. iStat Menu
8. Magnifique (Theme changer)

Would these types of apps cause my MBP to run hotter?

yes, so does your dashboard, all of those and dashboard running is just silly.
