I dropped my phone right onto concrete the other day. Landed on a corner, no physical damage.

But, I noticed today that the OIS doesn’t seem to engage on the 3x camera on photo mode. In video mode, you can clearly see the stabilization happening.

I’m not sure if this is typical, or if this is something new that’s happening as a result of the drop?

Can anyone with a 13PM open their 3x camera and compare photo mode to video? Does video seem stabilized while photo does not? My wife’s 11PM is clearly stabilized even in photo mode.

Any help is appreciated, thanks!

Edit: I just noticed that switching from 1x to 3x camera in photo mode results in ZERO stabilization. BUT - if you snap a picture then the stab comes on and stays on. So weird. I hope I’m not the only one, and this is just a characteristic of the phones.

The 1x has different stabilisation compared to the other lenses. On my 13 pro the 3x is just slightly more stabilised then without stabilisation. In portrait mode the stabilisation is off on both lenses. Try tapping the phone with your finger while on photo with 3x and on portrait with 3x. Is minimal difference regarding stabilisation, compared to 1x lens

Yeah I’m aware that the 1x camera has sensor shift and the 3x camera is just OIS. I’m not confused about that.

I’m concerned that the OIS doesn’t seem to engage on the 3x camera until you actually snap a picture. Once you snap a picture, you can clearly see the OIS engage and the stabilization working. The frame goes from jittery to totally smooth.

Compared to my wife’s 11 pro, as soon as you pull up the camera and switch to 2x, you can clearly see the OIS kick in and stabilize the frame.

Can someone here please check their phone and tell me if they see this same behavior or not? Really curious about this.

Thanks everyone.

(I did do a screen recording to show exactly what I mean. It’s easy to see the stab kick in after t triggering the shutter. I’ll upload it to YouTube shortly)

I have checked and have the same behaviour.
Stabilisation is bad when on picture on telephoto. Moving to video becomes silky smooth. If I take a photo with 3X (telephoto) it does seem to get better/more stable. As if the stabilisation kicked in only then.

Did you solve this in any way? Or still the same?

Depending on the lighting, the iPhone does not use the 3x lens, but a digital zoom of the main camera, and with this the stabilization is really strange. The ideal way to check which camera your iPhone is using is to put your finger in front of it. Be aware of this.

Thanks
I tested this and it’s indeed the telephoto (3X) camera that has that behaviour …

However I’ve also noticed that when on video it’s always the same 1X camera… that’s why that one is super smooth and not jittery
