Knowing what the 4.0.1 patch does, I'm completely baffled by what I'm seeing.

With 4.0 at my desk I always had 5 bars but with the death grip I could drop it down to 2 or 3.

Now with 4.0.1 I still start with 5 bars but when I death grip it, I go all the way down to No Signal.

WTF! That really makes no sense to me.

Why are you baffled?

Steve already said that by applying the patch you'll see less bars.

It baffles me that it loses signal more then the difference in bars. The cutoff for no signal is even lower then it used to be which further makes it weird.

Seeing lots more E speed connection :D

I went from a little over 50% dropped calls to 90% with 4.0.1 and now I get a "no data connection" message when I have 3 bars in places where I had 1 bar and would download at a surprisingly fast rate. I don't even have to be holding the phone for the call to drop. Longest conversation I've had on my phone was just over 17 minutes. I'm lucky if it lasts 8 minutes since 4.0.1 and 2 minutes if I hold it.

Getting my phone replaced today!

edit: Most of the calls that weren't dropped were WITHOUT a case on!

Hmm with my iPhone 4 and with iOS 4.0.1 I couldn't get my signal to go below 1 bar and usually it will go back up tp 2 to 3 while death gripping it. I was on the phone doing this testing and testing it with the Internet all seemed to be working fine. I will be getting my free bumper because I like free stuff :).
