it was frozen so i pulled the phone off
now
its saying preparing iphone for restore and teh bar isnt moving its been like this for 15 mins.

Your phone is not bricked.

Bricked means it's worthless, and your phone will still work just fine by...

A. Shutting it off
B. Putting it in DFU mode
C. Restore from the 4.0 ipsw!

Thanks and come again

It's not bricked.

"Bricked:
To render your computer useless, as useless as a brick. Usually the result of tampering with the insides and doing irreversible damage. Bricking your hardware leaves you with a new paperweight."

You will be able to restore it if you take the right steps. Anything that eventually works again is not bricked. Everyone misuses this term.

Why did pulling the phone out seem to be a smart option?

just over an hour

Mine is restarting now so wont be long to see what damage it's done
Pity I won't have all the features on my 3G but a 4 is just around the corner once the dust has settled and I've seen who has the best tariffs. O2, Orange, Vodafone, 3, Tmobile???? What choice.

*plug is phone*
waits a whole 10 seconds*
*goes crazy and screams it must be frozen!*

your fault op.

I'm having problems too, I didn't pull the cable but the update failed first time and now all I get is an unknown error 21 when I try to restore - any ideas?

 Pulling out is always doomed to fail.

This is one time pulling out is not advised.

Sounds like a USB error. Try another USB port (one off the motherboard preferably) or use a different USB cable. You also might want to reboot your computer.

I have tried everything and I still get error 21. ahhhhh

dfu/ downgrading usb drivers everything. i am well annoyed.
