4:3 1080p on a 16:9 32" widescreen

A while ago I tried using the VGA adapter with my macbook pro to connect it to my 32" Vizo HDTV. When I had everything connected, I could not get a full screen image. The image would display in 4:3 and not 16:9, but finder said it was displaying full 1080p. Could anyone help explain why the adapter did not allow me to display in full screen?
