I haven't seen much about this. Is the thought that these phones will have the same resolution? If I can get more screen resolution, I'll go with the bigger phone. If the bigger one is less dense pixels, then i'll probably go with 4.7". Thoughts?

I would bet they are going to have the same resolutions. If you look at the other phones on the market around those sizes, they all generally have the same resolution.

Yeah, probably like the iPad Air and iPad Mini retina. Both have 2048 x 1536 resolution, with the Air at 264 ppi and the rMini at 326 ppi.

For me the new screen resolution is almost the most interesting thing about the iPhone 6.
I'm pretty sure both sizes will have the same resolution. Hoping for more than todays 326ppi because it's not always enough.

My sentiment too. Will likely go with 4.7 in if it has higher pixel density, hoping for higher density than 326 ppi.

This just seems crazy to me. The average computer monitor has around 100ppi, yet we are asking for higher than 300ppi on our phones... Just crazy! But I do imagine a new resolution will be introduced...

Why does that seem crazy? It's all about view distance. An HDTV can have less then 50 PPI and look great, sit arms length away and it looks terrible.

Movie theater is 5-10 PPI (10 being 4K).

Those jumbotrons at sport stadiums are less then 1 PPI.

Phones need to be high because people hold them close to their faces.

To a point yes. But comparing to a computer monitor, I normally sit 2-3 feet from a 24" monitor with 1080p resolution. Most of the time I am 1-2 feet away from my phone that has close to the same resolution. And we are asking for more? Why?

You are confusing me. There is no way to get around PPI when changing the resolution and screen size.

You said you'd like to see a change in resolution. Lets use the standards of HD and the rumored size of the iPhone.

At 720 (1280x720) on a 4.7" screen that is a PPI of 312.
At 1080 (1920x1080) on a 4.7" screen that is a PPI of 457.

To keep the current PPI you'd come up with a 1345x760 screen @ 4.7" or something strange like that (I'm just using a calc I don't have a stretch pad but its something close to that).

At one time I heard they would both have the same resolution (which would be very nice for developers like me) and that resolution would be something like 1.333x the current size to make for easy scaling.

For those interested, 1704x960 on 4.7" is 416 PPI and on 5.5" is 356 PPI.

All this talk makes me excited to see what is going to be released come fall.

Hmm, I hold iPhone closer than 2 feet, maybe because I'm nearsighted. Anyways, for me benefit of higher density on slightly larger screen is real.

Easy. Higher numbers.

We all do. 2' away is pretty much arms length stretched for a 6' tall man. Basically shoulder to wrist. I never really see anyone using any phone/tablet or laptop (on a lap/desk) at that distance.

I'm good with the resolution, to me it's going to come down to the bezel. Early mockups are massive on the larger one. I would prefer the 5.5 but in a size comparable to the competition.
