In Lion the default way to push all windows to the sides and use the desktop is 3 fingers and your thumb, but I just CANNOT get used to it. Is there a way to bring back the 4 finger swipe up to show the desktop?

Unfortunately, they also took out the F11 shortcut--it doesn't even do anything now. I find I have the easiest time with it if I use all 5 fingers. Place them together, then expand in the same motion you would use simply to open your hand. Hope that helps.

Now they didn't. Make sure the shortcut is set in the Mission Control preference pane and that you check the box that lets you use the F1-F12 keys as function keys in the Keyboard preference pane.

I turned on 3-finger drag and 4-finger swipes bring up mission control and switch desktops.
