I have two 4 Gb G-drives. Both are quite old; I see an announcement online that puts them at 2012, but I bought them on eBay. I know they worked once, and I've used them as backups.

Now both of them have the same problem: you push the 'on' button and the power light goes on and you can hear the disks start to spin up, but two second later the light goes off and the disks spin down. If you hold the power button in, this sequence repeats over and over and over, as long as you hold the power button down. It's connected with 800 Firewire. I've tried starting them without connecting Firewire, but the same thing happens.

So clearly it working in the sense it comes alive. But it refuses to come 'on' in the normal way. The fact that they have exactly the same problem leads me to believe there is something I'm missing that would power them up.

They look like this: (eSata, 2 x 800 Firewire, USB 2.0):

I answered my own question. It was a power issue. I plugged them directly into a wall socket (rather than a power strip), and they started right up.
