So, can the new retna macbook pro really handle 6 monitors? Sounds like it.

Laptop display
Thunderbolt 1 + Thunderbolt 2
Thunderbolt 3 + Thunderbolt 4
HDMI
 
I severely doubt it. The I/O power might be there, but there's no way the GPU can push that many pixels.
 
No it wont, it clearly states two external display if you read the specification page.
 
Just because you can plug them all in doesn't mean the GPU can drive them.

You can physically connect two monitors (Thunderbolt display + daisy chain) to the Macbook Air, but it won't work because it only supports one external display (at least the pre-2012 models).
