4-year old Macbook programs crashing constantly

i have had my 13.3' Macbook for four years now, and recently programs will be crashing almost as soon as I open them, especially Internet browsers and my Microsoft Office suite. I almost can't do anything with my computer because of how often I am restarting programs. I know my computer is old, but is this typical of an older computer? Or is it possible I could have some other issue?

First thing to do is to run Apple Hardware Test.

If you get Errors report back here.

You could also try the following, make a new User account, restart and login into new account, do you still have the same problems?
