£40.30 for 3 MMS messages from India

I have just returned from a trip to India and have been charged £40.30 for data roaming while there. This is despite having Data Roaming turned OFF the ENTIRE TIME I was away.
Having done a bit of reading on the O2 Forum it appears that my situation is not unique, but related to sending MMS messages.

The messages I sent did take a long time to go through, so it maybe possible that while the phone was struggling to send the MMS it opened roaming and downloaded emails and attachments in the background.
There is absolutely no way that I used Data Roaming while in India. There seems to genuinely be something wrong with the system whereby Data Roaming is activated when sending MMS messages.

Ouch that's expensive, i'll be sure not to use MMS when on holiday just in case.

MMS is most definitely data.

This is why I think it's a poor service and is a con in my opinion...

I do think it is a bit off that it let you send the message when you have Data Roaming switched off.

According to O2 MMS costs 25 Pence from Asia/ Pacific.
It is the data in the background that is costing the money.

It should be cheaper now that the EU have imposed a cap on data. Although they do have until next year to implement it.

€1 for 1mb of data - not bad.

From what I've read that is just the max carriers can charge each other while what they can charge the consumer is still more.

Isn't that only when roaming within EU states though?

If not then I am (pleasantly) surprised! The EU delivers for once.
