Will the 40 watt charger hurt my battery on the 17 pro vs only using a 20 watt apple charger . I’d love to have the speed of 40 watt but don’t want it hurting my battery in the long run . Thanks for any light shed on this .

It won’t charge faster than the maximum designated charging speed.

That being said, faster charging will generate more heat and heat can cause the battery to degrade.

At the moment this question is purely rhetorical since my 17 Pro has more juice, even charged overnight to just 80%, than I've come close to using in a day, but...

Is it better for battery health to charge to slow-charge to 80% overnight and then top off with the 40 watt charger as needed on days with high usage, or is it better to to slow-charge to 100% overnight and have enough capacity it make it through the whole day, every day?

Honestly I’ve always just charged my phone to 100% every night and if the battery becomes an issue, I have it replaced. It’s been an issue one time on my iPhone 7. My iPhone 14PM was getting close to needing a battery replacement, but I kept it for 3 years and just traded it in towards my 17PM.

Same with my 14 Pro. Got it on launch day, and three years later when I traded for the 17 Pro it was under 80% health and saying battery needs service. Doesn't seem like using the 5w charger and optimized charging really paid dividends on that device, so this time I'm charging with 20w. Who knows, some day I may really throw caution to the wind and use the wireless charger in my car. 🤣
