How to Upgrade HD

I have a WD hard drive that I was considering installing in my MBP. I have using it without problems as back up using time machine. My question is what is the best way to get my existing files and Leopard off of my existing HD and onto my new WD drive wants it becomes my new HD?

Is this risky? I would not want to loose anything. I still have lots of room on m existing drive.

I think I am confused? you have a HD in a case? that you want to put in to your MBP. If so you can borrow another portable HD back up using Tim Machine. swap the drives, and then restore the wd drive thats in you computer. OR you can clone your HD using SUPERduper, or CCC. do a search on the forum.

Not quite yet...SuperDuper! is still not quite Leopard ready but hopefully it will be soon. Carbon Copy Cloner is good now so use that for bootable cloning.

how simple is it to upgrade the internal hard drive of a MBP? I've done it dozens of times in desktop PC's but never in a laptop. cuz the laptop-sized drives are getting better and better and i'd love to get a little extra room on my MBP.

The MBP HDD is not considered user-replaceable, so while it wouldn't break you, it would break the warranty should something go wrong. The MacBook (not Pro) is the only current Apple laptop with a "user-replaceable" HDD.

Should you decide to do it yourself, it's a bit of a PITA, but you can have it replaced by any Apple-authorized service center or tech and know the warranty is protected. Many users here have swapped their own with no ill effects.
