42GB "Other" on the hard drive breakdown on my MBPR about right?

As the topic title says really. It just seems a hell of a lot, and seems to fluctuate without me adding much really, but also seems to go down without doing much swell (e.g. when I deleted a lot of photos to put on again for another reason, the other segment seemed to have halved, but went up when I re added them (along with the photos part).
I know that it obviously depends on how much you have on you pro but is this amount about normal? I don't have much on here really, the biggest thing by a long way is MS Office 2011.

Download the free app OmniDiskSweeper which will display a list of all folders/files sorted by size.

That way you'll see what is consuming the space. This app is handy because it includes the hidden files, such as Sleepimgage file, and the local backups if you use Time Machine (yes TimeMachine saves backups on your local drive for laptops)
