Choices for the 42mm modern buckle have disappeared from the UK apple store both as part of the watch and if sold separately through the accessories page. A glitch maybe?

no longer in USA store either

It's still there (USA anyway). You have to click on "all bands" to see the entire offering. They just don't show on the bands/accessories landing page.

Defiantly still there

I still can't decide between Modern buckle or Milanese Loop.

I'm pro Modern buckle because of the solid clasp but seening the edge pop out will annoy me like it does on my Pebble watch now.

The Milanese Loop looks very chic but Im concerned about the magnet strength.

Which is why I'm planning on getting the watch with the rubber band, then going to the Apple store and picking out a premium band at my leisure once the mad rush during initial product release has died down.

I think I may end up doing the same. I want the sport band for everyday use and a better quality one like the Milanese or leather loop for more formal occasions. I'll probably get the stainless steel 42mm with the sport band initially and then go into the store and choose a higher quality one as a secondary strap.
