Will 1080p MKV files play fine on a MBP?

Perian is going to be your best option. 720/1080p h.264 encapsulated in a MKV has been the cause of a lot of hiccups and problems in playback.

The CPU power is there for h.264 but once you put it into a MKV all hell breaks lose.

Some will play fine with the latest VLC, others won't. Depends on the bitrate and compression of the MKV you're playing. CoreCodec just released their CorePlayer Professional for Mac. Now that is pretty much guaranteed to play all your 1080p MKV's smoothly.

Yes. They play lovely in Quicktime with Perian 1.1 or in VLC player.

+1 for Perian 1.1 and Quicktime. 1080p Matroska files play smoothly on my MBP.

Uh, play them in VLC. Go to preferences, and choose the 'All' setting. Then go to Input/Codecs -> Other codecs-> FFmpeg -> and choose 'Non-ref' for "Skip the Loop filter for H.264 decoding"

GET VLC!!! No seriously. It plays everything in every format, including 1080p.

1080p MKV files play on my 1.5GHz LV tablet.

I have an early '08 mbp and I can play 1080p mkv just fine. I personally would recommend mplayer over vlc for its superior subtitle rendering and user interface, although you will need a third party build (I use http://mplayerosx.sttz.ch/) or you will have to compile it yourself.
